RESEARCH GRANTS, Grundfast – EXTRAMURAL FUNDING

1.”Abnormal middle ear conditions and dysequilibrium in children.” Portion of N.I.H. Center grant, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, 1980.

2.Augmentin vs. Cefaclor in the treatment of acute otitis media -a double blind study. Pharmaceutical company grant. Study completed, results reported.

3.”A controlled clinical trial to evaluate interferon in the treatment of pediatric recurrent respiratory papillomatosis – A multi-center study.” Grant from NICDS. Study completed, report published in New England Journal of Medicine.

4.Diagnostic criteria and gene mapping for the Waardenburg Syndrome; clinical protocol approved by Institute Clinical Research Subpanel of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, NIH; protocol developed and study initiated during one year sabbatical at NIDCD. 1990, Study completed, results reported.

5. Gene mapping for nonsyndromic hereditary hearing impairment – United States protocol. NIDCD. Study uses linkage analysis to locate genes for NSHHI. 1992, Study continuing at NIDCD.

6. Gene mapping for nonsyndromic hereditary hearing impairment – India protocol. NIDCD. Collaborative study developed with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to utilize population isolates in India in attempt to locate characterize and sequence genes for NSHHI. 1992, Study continuing.

7. Auditory threshold and temporal bone morphology in a line of transgenic mice with loss of coat color. NIH Animal Studies protocol approved 6/1/91. Study completed 6/30/93, results reported & published.

8. $6,535 subcontract for consulting services as part of the National Institutes of Health Grant #1 DC02530-01A3 “Genetic Studies.,

RESEARCH GRANTS, Grundfast – INTRAMURAL FUNDING:

1. Prospective study of risk factors causing subglottic stenosis in neonates. ($10,000 grant support: Research Awards and Advisory. Committee/Board of Lady Visitors – CHNMC.) Study completed, results reported, published

2. Prospective study of relationship between otitis media and meningitis. Study initiated January 1988, terminated June 1992. ($6,000 grant support: Research Awards and Advisory Committee); Insufficient data for report or publication.

3. Development of a model program for gaining access to school for children with tracheotomies ($2,600 from Child Health Center Board); completed, results reported, published.

4. Prospective study comparing outpatient and inpatient tonsillectomy ($10,000 Research Awards and Advisory Committee); completed, results reported, published.

ONGOING UNFUNDED RESEARCH PROJECT

Molecular and cellular indicators of fibroblast activation in tympanic membrane retraction pockets. Approved by Institutional Review Board of the Children’s National Medical Center, November, 1993; patients enrolled, study continuing with Scott Schoem, M.D. now principal investigator.
