Application for Resident Training


The application process for Resident training in Otolaryngology, PGY 1,  starting July, 2011, begins in September, 2010, through the NRMP. The deadline for receipt by us of all application materials, with the exception of the letter from your Dean, is November 1, 2010. Applications not completed by that date will not be processed.

Applicants must have a M.D. degree from a School of Medicine which is approved by the Liaison Committee of Medical Education or by the Canadian Council of Medicine. Graduates of foreign medical schools must have passed the FMGEMS examinations.

Application for admission to the training program is made through the National Residency Matching Program , ERAS Registration of the AAMC

You may be invited to appear for an interview in November, 2010 or December, 2010.

We further request that applicants have or will obtain:

  • A clerkship in otolaryngology. Although it is not an absolute requirement that the clerkship be taken in our institution, it is advantageous to the candidate and to the program if it is taken in one of our hospitals, e.g., Boston Medical Center, VA, and CHMC.     Selection Process

    All applications to the Program are reviewed by the Program Director, the Chairman, and the full time faculty, who select those suitable for interview. Faculty members interview each candidate so selected and submit a written evaluation to the Program Director. Final candidate ranking for entry into the National Resdency Matching Program is made by the Program Director guided by the advice of the Resident Selection Committee which is made up of the Chairman, all faculty who have been involved with the interview process and residents of the program who have had extensive contact with the candidates.

    Number of Residents selected

    Three (3) residents are selected annually for the The Boston University Training Program in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery.


    The Matching program

    Our program, like most training programs in Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery, is very competitive. Accordingly, we believe that “the Match” is the best and fairest system for all, and we strictly adhere to it. All residents are selected through the National Residency Matching Program.     WHEN TO APPLY: September-November, 2010 through the NRMP.

    INTERVIEWS:

    WHEN- One day during a weekday or weekend in  November/December    WHO- The Chairman/Program Director and some of the twelve other faculty members interview the candidates

    OTHER- You will have an opportunity to speak with the program’s residents through out the day, and at luncheon which is provided.
    Plan to spend an entire day.
