Career Development Retreat, Dec 19, 2008

Bridging Cllinical, Teaching, and Scientific Roles took place December 19 in L-110. It was open to all medical campus faculty, including jointly-appointed faculty of Boston University and the Boston and Bedford VA medical centers, and was promoted by news items (Timely retreat highlights BU-VA affiliation) featured on the BUMC main web page, announcements broadcast through the BUMC all-faculty listserv and BUSPH Insider, and departmental promotion. On a wintry day as the first major storm of the year approached, with City of Boston school closings and BU emergency systems on full alert, 93 people attended, nearly 70% of those who signed up. Attendees represented clinical sciences (83% of attendees), public health disciplines (11%) and included a few basic scientists. They were a broad mix of physicians (53%), PhDs (35%), MD/PhDs (5%) and others, ranging from trainees (5%) to young investigators (37%), senior investigators or clinicians (34%), speakers (22%) and others. Twenty-four evaluators gave an overall rating of 4.2 out of 5, with 19 of 24 stating that they would change their practice as a result of attendance.

Boston University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. BUSM designated this educational activity for a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™; the Office of Continuing Medical Education mailed certificates to attendees; e-mail CME if you did not receive yours.

Shuttle service was available from West Roxbury VA and Jamaica Plain VA to BUMC on Dec. 19, and back.

Faculty Development Retreat, May 8-9, 2008

A first-ever Faculty Development Retreat on May 8-9, 2008 for Department of Psychiatry faculty from Boston and Bedford VA, Boston Medical Center, and Boston University School of Medicine, was sponsored by ORA and VABHS Research Service. The Retreat was designed as internal outreach to affiliated faculty of both Boston University and VA, to ensure that faculty understand their roles in the academic medical enterprise as well as expectations for their advancement. One hundred people attended and twenty-two of them evaluated the two-day program with a rating of 4.46 (out of 5) on whether it met its objectives. CEUs were available for this program.
