Fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The Department of Ophthalmology at Boston University School of Medicine offers a two-year American Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) approved fellowship under the direction of Suzanne K. Freitag, M.D. One fellow is selected every two years, and this is an “even years” ASOPRS fellowship. This program provides comprehensive, hands-on training in all aspects of oculoplastic surgery, including eyelid, orbit, lacrimal and cosmetic. The fellow works closely with Dr. Freitag as well as residents and will be actively involved in the residency teaching program.
The fellowship locations include Boston Medical Center, as well as the VA Boston Healthcare System in Jamaica Plain. The Boston VA is a regional referral center for all of New England, and the residents who staff the VA are from Boston University and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. The Boston University fellow is the only oculoplastics fellow to participate in VA activities.
Boston University Eye Associates also has four satellite offices and an ambulatory surgery center in the South Shore area, providing the fellow with the opportunity to experience these varied work environments. The fellow will be able to interact with attending physicians in a variety of other specialties, including otolaryngology, oral maxillofacial surgery, dermatology, Mohs surgery, neuroradiology, plastic surgery, ophthalmic pathology, etc. The fellow will spend an average of one day per week with Michael Migliori, M.D. in Providence, RI at Rhode Island Hospital and at his private office adjacent to the hospital. The commute time from Boston to Providence is one hour. Dr. Migliori will provide additional training in all areas of oculoplastics, with an excellent scope of cosmetic procedures, including lasers. Upon successful completion of the two year fellowship, the fellow will be eligible to apply for admission to ASOPRS, submit a thesis, and then sit for the ASOPRS written and oral examinations. It is expected that the fellow will pursue ASOPRS membership.
