BUMC Out and Ally List
Every October 11, National Coming Out Day addresses the often-difficult process of “coming out” shared by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.
In 2012, MedGLO and the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs began building an Out and Ally* List. For us, “coming out” as LGBT or an Ally is more than a simple declaration of identity or solidarity. What we do here impacts the communities of which we are members.
“Ally:” Someone who respects sexual diversity, challenges homophobic behaviors, and explores bias within himself/herself. We recognize that it also takes courage as an ally to “come out” and support LGBT friends and colleagues.
The BUMC Out and Ally List reaffirms to
• Our students, faculty and staff – that we are committed to diversity and equality and will be a safe place to learn and grow.
• Our patients – that we provide excellent care for all.
• Medical institutions across the country – that the medical profession can and will be on the forefront of LGBT equality and inclusion.
The following individuals demonstrated their willingness to act as allies to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender members of the BUMC community and affirmed that they will do their best to ensure that our students, faculty, staff, patients, and colleagues feel safe and supported.
