Ms. Furlong earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Duke University in 1975, her MSW from Simmons Graduate School of Social Work in 1979, and a certificate in family therapy from the Cambridge Family Institute in 1982. She has thirty years of clinical experience with adults, families, adolescents, and children, having practiced in a wide variety of outpatient, hospital, school, and residential treatment settings. Ms. Furlong also has expertise in clinical supervision, having supervised MSW, LMHC, Ph.D., and Psy.D. interns for over twenty-five years. In 1997, she joined the faculty of the Boston University School of Social Work, where she teaches Adult Psychopathology, Family Therapy, Brief Treatment, Clinical Assessment and Intervention, and a course for doctoral students on teaching techniques. Her scholarly and practice interests include collaborative therapy with multi-stressed families; narrative therapy; treatment of youth and adults living with trauma, depression, anxiety, and chemical dependency; and gender bias in assessment and treatment. Ms. Furlong has a private practice, and is a frequent conference presenter. She was honored with Boston University School of Social Work’s Teaching Excellence Award in May 2007 and again in May 2009. This year, she joins the Mental Health Counseling and Behavioral Medicine Program as a part-time faculty member.
