Pilot Project Grant Program

Department of Medicine Pilot Project Grant Program

Purpose:

The purpose of Pilot Project Grants is to expand the breadth of research in the Department of Medicine. Investigators are encouraged to explore new, currently unfunded, avenues of research with the goal of acquiring sufficient new information to successfully apply for extramural grant support within one year. This includes Educational projects – projects with an educational outcome, but still serve as the basis of an RO1 or equivalent submission. The program does not serve to bridge funding, to extend an existing grant or to fund a project that will not lead to an RO1 or equivalent submission.

In keeping with our research strategic plan, to provide an optimal environment and support for translational research and to mentor and develop the next generation of biomedical researchers, we will give special consideration to applications:

  • on diseases disproportionately affecting the unique populations we serve
  • collaborative translational proposals
  • proposals in preparation for a Program Project.

Proposals to obtain preliminary data in support of a PPG or multi-disciplinary translational project could consist of up to four requests from single individuals each with the same title but a unique sub-title. They should all include the same short introductory paragraph explaining the overall goal of the PPG or translational project. Each component will be assessed individually and as a part of the whole and could be approved for funding as a separate entity or as part of the group.

Please note, the application cannot be more then 3 pages long

Eligibility:

Applicants must have a full time faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine.

Evaluation Criteria:

Pilot Project Grant applications are evaluated and ranked for funding priority by the Research Review Committee. Prospects that the project will lead to submission of a fundable, extramural grant application will be the predominant criteria for review of these applications. The Research Review Committee will also consider whether the proposal fosters new inter-sectional collaborations and how the proposed research advances existing research programs within the Department.

Awards:

Pilot Project Grants are awarded for one year. The award is usually for $15,000 with a maximum of $25,000 for clinical projects that can be adequately justified. Funds may be used for any purpose other than faculty salary support. Typical expenses include laboratory supplies, small equipment, patient costs, consultants or support for pre/postdoctoral students or technicians. Awards are not transferable to any other institution.

By accepting these funds, the applicant agrees to submit a report no later than one year after the end of the grant indicating any publications, grant applications and grants that resulted from the project.

Deadlines:
One deadline annually, July 1 with an activation date of September 1.
