Summary of Academic Interests:
Dr. Dedier’s research interests include understanding the influence of ethnic, cultural and environmental factors on risk-related behaviors for cardiovascular disease and cancer among underprivileged urban minority groups. He seeks to apply computer-assisted communication technologies to create behavioral interventions that are appropriately tailored to the ethnic, cultural and contextual characteristics of urban minorities of low socioeconomic status. He has received funding from the NIH to study the relation of ethnic identity to the prevalence and severity of behavioral risk factors for cancer and cardiovascular disease among Boston’s black residents. He has now extended this work to study how interventions to improve energy balance among urban blacks may be tailored to their users’ cultural characteristics.
