Giving Priorities

Our generous contributors donate to hundreds of funds here at the Boston University School of Medicine. While some of our most generous donors have established professorships, lectureships and scholarships, each contribution is very important to the School, and the general annual fund allows the School of Medicine to continue the good work on behalf of students and the general public. We detail below some funds for which we are currently soliciting donations. If you are unsure about where you would like your gift to the School to go, please consider one of these funds:

Alzheimer’s Disease Research

To support both clinical research and basic science research on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders conducted by scientists across the School of Medicine.  For additional information, please click on the following link : http://www.bu.edu/alzresearch/

Autism Center

To support the research conducted by the Autism Research Center at the School of Medicine.

BU School of Medicine Annual

This fund is designated to provide general support where the need is the greatest at BUSM.

City Lab Mobile Laboratory

The Mobile Laboratory serves to bring the City Lab program directly to a wide variety of schools.

Dean’s Discretionary

Contributions allow the Dean to disperse funds to the neediest program, particularly student programs.

Medical Research

We are also seeking support for medical research. Here at the School of Medicine, almost every area of medical study is being explored by highly qualified researchers. Fund have been established to continue work in the following areas: Amyloidosis , Cancer, Breast Cancer, Alzheimers, Scleroderma, Psoriasis, Diabetes, Dermatology, Sickle Cell Anemia, Parkinson’s Disease (and other neurological disorders), Cardiovascular disease/Hypertension, Orthopedic disorders , Inflammatory Bowel Disease, to list only a few.

Medical School Scholarship

Financial aid and scholarship assistance is the Dean’s highest priority, and Dean Karen H. Antman, M.D. has a $50 million goal for this purpose. Recent graduates have had debt loads averaging $140,000, and the upward trend in debt continues to increase. The Dean and other School of Medicine officials are most concerned that the cost of medical education is reaching levels that will serve to exclude students of limited means. Individual scholarships may be endowed at a minimum of $100K.

Medical Students Emergency

To provide emergency funds to help medical students with all types of emergencies that strain them financially including, but not limited to, travel for personal or family reasons, theft and loss of property, medical expenses when there is a limit to the numbers of visits covered by insurance, and eviction due to lack of rent funds.

Student Residence

(Click above link for further information)

The School of Medicine is planning safe, affordable housing adjacent to the Medical Campus and has begun fundraising efforts for this project.

Over the past ten years, the neighborhood surrounding the medical campus has grown and developed.  Now, some of the finest restaurants and boutiques are just steps away from Boston University School of Medicine.

As the neighborhood becomes more successful, our students have had more difficulty finding affordable housing. They are being forced further and further from campus and commute up to a couple of hours each way to attend classes.  Student housing has become a top priority.

Students Special Needs

To provide financial help for certain medical needs not covered by Disability Services or student medical insurance to students at the School of Medicine, with a preference for 3rd and 4th year students. These medical need include, but are limited to, equipment such as prosthetic limbs, special blood pressure cuff and thermometers for visually impaired students and special magnified stethoscopes for hearing impaired students.

Student Summer Research Program

Summer research experiences expand medical students’ view of the world of medicine, and this program gives students exposure to clinical investigation in the formative stages of their medical careers. Summer research scholarships of $2000 are awarded to first-year medical students for an 8-10 week summer research experience at BUMC. Funding is needed to support these annual awards, and also to open up the program to as many students as possible.
