E-Newsletter Fall 2009

Dear Alumni,
The autumn season is upon us and the campus is abuzz with activity. It is still warm enough to enjoy the last of the summer weather, but cool enough so that the leaves on the trees are beginning to change into vibrant colors.
It is also the perfect time to let you know what is new at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). Your voices have been heard and as a complement to Campus and Alumni News, the medical school magazine, we welcome you to our new Alumni Association E-Newsletter. Our goal is to keep you informed about what is happening at your alma mater in a convenient format.
There are many activities happening here at BUSM, and I’m sure there is something being offered that you find of interest. In our Events section below you will find information about our Inaugural Fall Alumni Weekend, October 23 – 25, a lecture being presented by Osamu Shimomura, PhD, BUSM Professor Emeritus, Recipient of 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry on November 17th to the B.U. Medical Campus community, and more!
We hope you enjoy this newsletter and keep your connection to BUSM. Be on the lookout for my new blog! Please let me know what kinds of things you would like to hear more about!
Sincerely,
Jean E. Ramsey, MD, MPH ’90
Boston University School of Medicine
Assistant Dean of Alumni Affairs

The Entering Class of 2013
by Robert Witzburg ‘77, Associate Dean and Director of Admissions at the School of Medicine

|
Last month, we welcomed the newest incoming class of medical students to campus. The first-year class, with 176 entering students, is among the largest we have had. It is also among the strongest academically, and extremely diverse in terms of academic background, language, culture, race, and ethnicity. More than 25% of the students hold graduate degrees, many of them have published scientific papers, and most of them have devoted considerable energy to community service. These wonderful young people are already actively engaged in both the curriculum and in various aspects of campus life.
