Howard Bauchner, M.D. ’79 – Distinguished Alumnus Award 2009

 Howard Bauchner, M.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, and is the Director of the Division of General Pediatrics and Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs. 

Prior to coming to BUSM, he completed his undergraduate training at the University of California, Berkeley.  He did his pediatric residency at Boston City Hospital (now Boston Medical Center) and Yale-New Haven Hospitals and was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Fellow in General Pediatrics at Yale.

Dr. Bauchner is an accomplished researcher and mentor.  He has published more than 125 papers in peer-reviewed journals.  His area of expertise includes clinical trials, quality improvement, and evidence-based medicine and he has conducted clinical and health services research in the area of child health promotion.  He has a senior career mentoring award from the NIH (K-24), and research support from USDA, NIH, and MCHB. 

Over the past decade he has mentored over a dozen fellows and faculty, many of whom have become successful members of academic departments around the country.

He became Editor-in-Chief of Archives of Disease in Childhood (ADC) and is the first US Editor of ADC, which is the official publication of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Bauchner has been on numerous other editorial boards and is currently on the boards of Journal Watch and Journal Watch Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

He has served on various grant review groups for the NIH and Bureau of Health Professions and is currently on the Advisory Board for the National Library of Medicine. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

In addition to his role in the Department of Pediatrics, he is Assistant Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Alumni Affairs at BUSM.

The Alumni Association happily presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. Bauchner on May 9, 2009, for his outstanding career in Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
