Committees

MD/PhD Preselection and Admissions Committee – Selwyn Broitman, PhD, Chair

The MD/PhD Preselection and Admissions Committee is comprised of faculty representatives from each department and program at the School of Medicine that participates in the MD/PhD Combined Degree Program.  Also included is a faculty representative from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering, and two elected MD/PhD student representatives.  The GMS Director and MD/PhD Administrator also sit on this committee as ex officio members.

MD/PhD Executive Committee – David Farb, PhD, Chair

The MD/PhD Executive Committee is composed of faculty representatives from each participating department and program in the School of Medicine, as well as from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the College of Engineering.  In addition, the Associate Dean of GMS, the Assistant Dean of Medical School Admissions, MD/PhD faculty advisors, Office of Student Affairs faculty liaison, and two elected student representatives also serve on this committee.  The Dean of the School of Medicine is an ex officio member, as well as the Director of GMS and program administrator.

The chair of this committee is appointed by the Associate Dean of GMS in consultation with the Dean of the School of Medicine.  The Executive Committee meets monthly during the academic year, and as needed. Each meeting includes a report from the M.D., Ph.D. Program Director, Faculty Advisors, and a report from one of the student representatives. The committee addresses emerging issues relevant to the program. Should any matters concerning individual students be brought to the committee (e.g., request for withdrawal from the program), the student representatives are recused from the discussion.  All decisions are made by majority votes and recorded in notes from each meeting.

MD/PhD Working Group – Benjamin Wolozin, MD, PhD, Chair

The purpose of the M.D./ Ph.D. Working Group is to assist in the development of the educational component of the program. The work group is composed of the M.D./ Ph.D. faculty advisors and additional faculty, and two student representatives.   The working group meets monthly and focuses on developing  educational approaches.  New educational initiatives are presented to the M.D./ Ph.D. Executive Committee and to the BUSM Medical Education Committee for evaluation.

MD/PhD Student Advisory Group – Benjamin Wolozin, MD, PhD, Chair

The Student Advisory Group functions help identify and work with the program administrators regarding any emerging student issues.  The goal of the committee is to identify emerging needs of the student body as early as possible, and to develop strategies to best serve the student body.  The M.D./Ph.D. Student Advisory Group meets monthly with the faculty advisors and selected administrators to proactively manage student concerns as they develop. The committee is composed of the M.D.,/Ph.D. faculty advisors, six representatives from the M.D., Ph.D. student government, and the GMS Director and program administrator. The student representatives change each year as new student government representatives are elected.

MD/PhD Student Government

Students play a very active role with all aspects of the MD/PhD Combined Degree Program.  Student Representatives who serve on the MD/PhD Executive Committee, GMS Steering Committee, and MD/PhD Preselection and Admissions Committee are elected by the student body.  In addition, students are also elected to serve on student committees that include the Student Affairs Committee; Seminar Committee; Retreat Committee, and SCOMSA. The role of the students in student government is articulated in the MD/PhD Student Constitution.
