Windows 10 Manual Updates

On BUMC IT-managed computers, Windows 10 feature updates (Creator’s Update, Anniversary Update) are blocked from auto-installing when released. This prevents our Windows 10 computers from upgrading unannounced or unexpectedly.

Beginning in 2018, old versions of Windows 10 will be upgraded to newer versions of Windows 10. This is because only the 3 most recent versions will get continuous security updates. As such, all old versions of Windows 10 will need to be upgraded.

If you wish to upgrade ahead of schedule, follow the steps below.

1. Right-click the Windows icon in the bottom left.
2. Click Settings.
3. Click “Updates and Security” on the Settings page, or: in the Settings search box, type “update”, and choose the “Check for updates” option.
4. Look for “Check Microsoft Update for updates” or “Check online for updates from Microsoft Update”. Click this link.
5. Wait for Windows to finish it’s check for update, then it will prompt you to restart or pick a time to perform updates.
6. If a particularly update says it failed, try the process again, if it fails multiple times, you may need updates to your anti-virus or other software. If so, submit a ticket to bumchelp@bu.edu with your asset tag #.
