Healer’s Art

Healer's ArtExploring the Human Dimension in Medicine

Integrative medicine is not just a new set of techniques or therapies, but an approach to healing that is infused with compassion, caring, and generous listening.  The goal of integrative medicine is not only to fix or cure the patient’s disease, but to view the patient as a whole person in the context of their family, community and culture.  To help instill and reinforce these core integrative medicine values in our future physicians, we started offering the Healer’s Art elective to Boston University medical students in 2006.  Originally designed and offered by Dr. Rachel Remen at UCSF in 1993, Healer’s Art addresses the human dimension of medicine through cultivating compassion, exploring grief and loss, and helping students realize their commitment to medicine as a calling to help and heal others.
