Junior and Senior Residency Rotations
The PGY-2 and PGY-3 years allow house officers some flexibility to design their own personal experience in accordance with individual preferences and interests. These years are organized as a 24 month continuum, with certain rotations considered integral to each year, while others are scheduled at each house officer’s discretion and program availability. In addition to the traditional elective block rotations, residents have the opportunity to build their elective time devoted to the pursuit of one area in depth, such as a research interest or intensive training in a clinical subspecialty or clinical practice.
Core rotations which are completed during the junior and senior residency include inpatient general medical wards, inpatient subspecialty wards, medical intensive care, cardiac intensive care, emergency medicine, medical consultation, ambulatory care, night float, and 4 weeks of vacation.
Elective opportunities include medical subspecialty consult rotations including the cardiomyopathy service and electrophysiology service. Rotations may also be done outside of Internal Medicine in certain specialties including Dermatology and Radiology. Research may be conducted within all Divisions in basic science or clinical and translational laboratories under the guidance of a faculty member. All residents are required to present evidence of academic research at the end of their senior year at Senior Resident Academic Day in which various abstracts, case studies, and primary research projects are displayed for fellow house officers, faculty, and alumni to observe.
