ABIM Research Pathway
For residents planning a research-oriented career in academic medicine, the Department offers an American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Research Pathway. In accordance with guidelines of the American Board of Internal Medicine, clinical training is integrated with research training which is part of a subspecialty or general medicine fellowship. Individuals who select this pathway usually go on to complete the clinical component of the fellowship, achieving board eligibility. Although especially suited for individuals who have prior research experience, this pathway is open to selected residents with interest in an academic career. Opportunities for basic research or clinical investigation are numerous and include the many laboratories at Boston University School of Medicine, the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, the Evans Memorial Department of Clinical Research, the Finland Laboratory for Infectious Diseases, the Boston VA Medical Center, Boston University School of Public Health, and the Framingham Heart Study.
Applicants interested in this program should make their interest known before the interview so that additional information can be made available.
