Requirements of the Student

Students participating in this elective program are required to:

  • Be in good academic standing and have endorsement from a dean in the Office of Student Affairs
  • Undertake pre-departure orientation proximal to the time of departure
  • Undertake onsite orientation upon arrival to Schneider Hospital
  • Engage in some degree of community service outreach with the undergraduate pre-medical students at UVI. The details are being worked out, but this might involve providing an “advising” talk or engaging in a lunch social with students who are thinking about a career in medicine and who might ultimately apply to the EMSSP program at BUSM.

Housing, Food, Airfare

Housing is provided free of charge to B.U. medical students at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), and students are required to stay at the designated apartment during rotations (vs. rent a hostel room). The apartment available to B.U. medical students – located a few miles from the hospital – accommodates six people at one time. There are four single rooms, one large double room, two bathrooms, kitchen, and living area. Students are responsible for their own bedding/linens.

Students are financially responsible for their flight and meals for this elective. Students may inquire to STA Travel (a student travel organization) to book flights.

For more info on housing, food prices, etc. view the following slide show: Description of BUSM – Schneider Fourth-Year Elective Program.
