Faculty and Staff

The primary faculty for the Genetic Counseling Program consists of genetic professionals within the Center for Human Genetics, including:

MaryAnn received a B.S. in Psychology from Furman University and an M.S. in Genetic Counseling from the University of South Carolina. Prior to coming to Boston Medical Center, she worked as a prenatal genetic counselor with the Greenwood Genetic Center in South Carolina. In addition to course instruction and program development, MaryAnn also serves as a prenatal genetic counselor at Boston Medical Center. She is currently involved with a research study on Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction through the Center for Human Genetics. She is also a member of the Ethics Advisory Board for the Framingham Heart Study.  

 

Jeff Milunsky, M.D., F.A.C.M.G.

Dr. Jeff Milunsky received his M.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Boston University School of Medicine in 1992. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at New England Medical Center and two fellowships, Clinical Genetics and Molecular Genetics, at Boston University. In addition to being the Medical Director for the Genetic Counseling Masters Degree Program, Dr. Milunsky also serves as the Associate Director of the Center for Human Genetics, the Director of Clinical Genetics, and Associate Director of Molecular Genetics. His research interests include the genetic etiology of syndromic and non-syndromic hearing loss, as well as mental retardation/multiple congenital anomaly syndromes.

 

Maureen Flynn, M.S., L.G.C., M.P.H.

Licensed Genetic Counselor                                                                    Originally from Chicago, Maureen received a B.S. in Cell & Structural Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She received her M.S. in Medical Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  She subsequently moved to Boston in 2002 to begin her role at the Boston University School of Medicine.  Maureen’s primary clinical interests include cancer genetic counseling, hereditary cancer syndromes, and pediatrics.  She received her M.P.H. with a concentration in Health Law from Boston University in 2007.

 

Aubrey Milunsky, M.D., D.Sc., F.A.C.M.G.

Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Biology, Pathology, and Human Genetics
Dr. Aubrey Milunsky was born and educated in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed his medical specialist training in London, and became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Clinical Genetics. After thirteen years as a medical geneticist at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital, he was appointed Professor of Pediatrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at BU School of Medicine and Founding Director of their Center for Human Genetics in 1981, Professor of Pathology in 1985, and Professor of Human Genetics in 1991. His laboratories are a major International Referral Center for molecular diagnostics and for prenatal genetic diagnosis, and he is the author and/or editor of twenty-two books. In 2004, Johns Hopkins University Press published the 5th edition of his major reference work Genetic Disorders and the Fetus: Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment. His latest book for the lay public – Your Genetic Destiny: Know Your Genes, Secure Your Health, Save Your Life was published in 2001 and  has been translated into 6 other languages. He is an elected member  of the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society and a Founding Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. In 1991, he became the incumbent of the first endowed Chair in Human  Genetics at Boston University School of Medicine –a Chair that will be  named for him upon his retirement.

 

Seema Jamal, M.Sc., L.G.C., C.C.G.C.

Born in Chicago, Seema headed to McGill University in Montreal to complete her undergraduate degree in Biology with a concentration in Human Genetics. She subsequently received her M.Sc. in Genetic Counselling from the University of Toronto. Back to her U.S. roots, Seema moved to Boston in 2005 where she is currently working at the Center for Human Genetics. Her primary responsibilities involve prenatal and pediatric genetic counseling.

 

 

Katherine E. Krepkovich, M.S., M.S., L.G.C.
Licensed Genetic Counselor

Katie received a B.A. in Biology and an M.S. in Biology (with a concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended the Genetic Counseling Program at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio and received an M.S. in Medical Genetics in June 2006. After graduating, she moved to Boston to begin her current position at the Center for Human Genetics. Her primary responsibilities involve prenatal genetic counseling and coordination of DNA Diagnostics.

 

 

Stephanie Newton, M.S., L.G.C.
Licensed Genetic Counselor
DNA Diagnostics Coordinator
Originally from Massachusetts, Stephanie received a B.S. in Biology from Providence College. She later attended the University of Pittsburgh and received her M.S. in Genetic Counseling in 2006. Following graduation, Stephanie returned to the east coast to work at the Center for Human Genetics. Her primary responsibilities involve clinical genetic counseling (adult and pediatrics) and coordination of DNA Diagnostics.

 

 

Ying Zou, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.M.G.
Director, Cytogenetics Laboratory
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
After receiving her Ph.D. in Genetics and Development from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dr. Zou completed an ABMG-accredited fellowship in the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Prior to her fellowship, she served as the Director of Cytogenetics & Microscopic Imaging Core at Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center in Dallas, TX. She also has professional training in Single Sperm Genotyping Analysis from Coriell Institute for Medical Research and in Advanced Molecular Cytogenetics from Cold Spring Harbor Lab. Dr. Zou has received numerous honors, grants, and awards, including the American Association for Cancer Research Scholar Award in 2004.

 

Zhenyuan Wang, Ph.D.
Director, DNA Diagnostic Laboratory
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
Dr. Wang received his B.A. in Biology at Anhui Agricultural University in Anhui, China. He completed his doctorate in Molecular Genetics at Cornell University before heading to Marshfield, Wisconsin for his postdoctoral fellowship, where he was an integral part of the research group that pioneered microsatellite gene mapping for the Human Genome Project. Dr. Wang also completed a second postdoctoral fellowship in Human Genetics at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He has been the Director of the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory for over five years. His research includes isolation of fetal DNA in maternal circulation and extended prenatal diagnosis using proteomics by Mass Spectrometry.

        

 

Raveen K. Basran, DPhil.
Assistant Director, Molecular Genetics Laboratory
Instructor of Pediatrics
Dr. Basran received her Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree from the University of Toronto in Human Biology. After completion of her undergraduate degree she went over the pond to England to complete her Masters and Doctorate degrees at the University of Oxford. Dr. Basran’s graduate work focused on hemoglobin disorders within Southeast Asia, an interest she continued through her postdoctoral work. Recently, Dr. Basran completed an ABMG-accredited fellowship in Clinical Molecular Genetics within the Center for Human Genetics.
