Hartshorn, MD</strong> received two subcontract grants with Principal Investigator, Barbara Seaton, PhD, of Boston University, entitled <em>&#8220;Collectins and Innate Defense against Inhaled Pathogens&#8221;</em> and <em>&#8220;Structural Basis of Antiviral Activity of Collectins,&#8221;</em> both of which have been funded by the NIH.</p>
<p><strong>George Murphy, PhD</strong> received a subcontract grant with Principal Investigator, Darrell N. Kotton, MD, of Boston University entitled <em>&#8220;Characterization of human hematopoietic and endodermal progenitors derived from iPS and ES cells&#8221;</em> funded by the NIH RC2.</p>
<p><strong>Xuemei Zhong, PhD</strong> was awarded a Department of Medicine pilot grant application entitled <em>&#8220;Effects of Thymic Infiltration of B Cells on Central Immune Tolerance in a Murine Lupus Model&#8221;</em> which has been selected for co-funding by the Department of Medicine and the BU Bridge (Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong><a href="/hematology/files/2009/08/eton_resize.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-859" src="/hematology/files/2009/08/eton_resize.jpg" alt="Omar Eton, MD" width="80" height="96" /></a>Omar Eton, M.D.</strong> has been appointed attending medical oncologist at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). Dr. Eton attended New York University School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency at Parkland Memorial Hospital at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. He then served as an American Cancer Society fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center training in oncology, hematology, and tumor immunology. He joined the medical oncology staff of MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas in the Melanoma Section and became the principal investigator for numerous clinical trials of vaccines, cytokines, intra-arterial therapy, and small molecule therapeutics for melanoma. He refined the staging of advanced melanoma and was a leader in the development of combined biochemotherapy, the most active regimen for patients with metastatic melanoma. He pioneered the clinical development of an autologous tumor-derived heat-shock protein peptide vaccine and of imatinib(Gleevec) as a targeted therapeutic.</p>
<p>Called up as an Air Force reservist after 9/11, Dr. Eton participated in humanitarian medical missions in South America and in Africa. Afterwards, he joined the oncology drug development team at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and led the international program developing and testing a novel aurora A kinase inhibitor.</p>
<p>At Boston Medical Center, Dr. Eton will serve as a solid tumor oncologist with a special interest in melanoma, targeted therapies, and clinical trials. Dr. Eton has been a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.</p>
<p><strong><a href="/hematology/files/2009/08/ngo_duyen-80x100.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-860" src="/hematology/files/2009/08/ngo_duyen-80x100.jpg" alt="Duyen Ngo, MD" width="80" height="104" /></a>Duyen Ngo, M.D.</strong> has been appointed attending physician in the Section of Hematology and Oncology at Boston Medical Center and Instructor at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Ngo received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. She completed her internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship in hematology and oncology at Boston Medical Center. Her research as a Sickle Cell Scholar will focus on understanding genetic determinants of hemoglobin F levels and other modifiers of clinical phenotype in patients with sickle cell disease. Her clinical interests include anemias, iron disorders, coagulopathies, sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies, platelet disorders, immune-mediated cytopenias, and other hematologic disorders.</p>
