Pediatric Special Interest Group, Monday October 28 12:45pm – 1:45pm

Moderators: Barbara Bayldon, Shalini Forbis

Focus of this year’s session will be on:  Approaches to studying interventions to improve health literacy.

In this session, we will share two investigator experiences designing or conducting studies to address barriers to working with vulnerable groups and overcoming health literacy barriers.

Deena Chisolm, PhD will discuss her study exploring the relationship between teen and parent literacy and readiness for transitioning.  She will provide insights into study design considerations as well as experiences working with a Medicaid ACO.

Linda van Schaick, MS, Ed. will discuss work on creating a low health literacy asthma action plan.

Nursing Special Interest Group, Monday October 28 12:45pm – 1:45pm

Moderators: Joy Deupree, Cathy Meade, Feleta Wilson

Objectives:

  1. How can the nursing profession advance the understanding of health literacy through research initiatives?
  2. What are the three most important health literacy research questions that nursing should explore?
  3. Establish a network for professional nurses to communicate with one another and the group on health literacy initiatives and research for the purpose of collaboration.
  4. Establish an infrastructure among Schools of Nursing that offer Doctorate Degrees in order to build an alliance that would facilitate mentoring opportunities for young researchers.

Measurement Special Interest Group, Tuesday October 29 1:00pm – 2:00pm

Moderator: Jolie Haun

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the current state of the science (e.g. publication of general, population, and condition specific health literacy instruments and their domains)
  2. Identify current gaps and needs in health literacy measure development methods and measurement
  3. Identify  steps to move the state of science forward, discussion will be guided by the proposed measurement research agenda in the HARC 2013 special edition of Health Communication
  4. Discuss actions and goals to go from the present to next year’s HARC meeting and beyond
