Cultural Competency at HARC

On October 17-18, 2011, the National Consortium for Multicultural Education for Health Professionals is sponsoring two newly funded activities [2R13MD006056-02 (Carter-Pokras) from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities] during the Health Literacy Annual Research Conference in Chicago.

On Monday, October 17, the Consortium is sponsoring a joint scientific panel of experts on cultural competency/health literacy from 1:30 – 3 pm. This panel will address: commonality between health literacy and cultural competency learning objectives and research questions; a conceptual framework for conducting research on the impact of cultural competency education on patient outcomes; lessons learned by researchers engaged in cultural competency and health literacy curriculum development; and incorporation of health literacy in CLAS standards and what that means for future practice and research. More information about the session can be found here

For those interested in publishing curricular products in cultural competency/health literacy/health disparities/health communication, we are offering a MedEdPortal workshop on Tuesday October 18 from 10:30-12 (part I) and 1:30-3 pm (part II). The Affordable Care Act calls for model curricula in cultural competency to be disseminated through an Internet Clearinghouse. Model curricula have been disseminated for several years through the Association of American Medical Colleges’s MedEdPortal, a free, online, searchable peer-reviewed publication service and repository for medical and oral health teaching materials, assessment tools, and faculty development resources (www.aamc.org/mededportal). The only resource that focuses exclusively on the continuum of medical education (UGME, GME, CME), MEP provides resources for faculty development to meet unique needs of educators. Since only 17 curricula products addressing health literacy are included in MEP, we are encouraging you to consider participating in this workshop to learn more about MedEdPortal and the submission process. More information about the workshop can be found here.
