MD/PhD Funding – Dean’s Scholarship

The Division of Graduate Medical Sciences provides an enhanced financial aid package for all MD/PhD candidates.

Funding for MD/PhD students is available in the form of a merit-based Dean’s Scholarship. The Dean’s Scholarship includes full medical school and graduate school tuition. In addition, MD/PhD students receive stipends during the PhD study years in accordance with the departmental PhD program.

Funding for the MD/PhD program breaks down as follows:

BUSM I & II (Years 1-2): Tuition covered by our enhanced financial aid package. This represents a scholarship of $57,250 per year based upon the 2016-2017 medical school tuition charges. The medical school fees and health insurance are not covered.

Please note: If a student withdraws from the PhD portion of the program, the scholarship must be repaid.

In addition to the above scholarships, students who participate in 8-10 weeks of research during the summer between the first and second year of BUSM may earn a $4,000 stipend, or alternatively, those who complete 4-5 weeks of research are eligible for $2,000.

Graduate/PhD studies (Years 3-6): All candidates are guaranteed both stipend and tuition. Tuition is covered by our enhanced financial aid package. This represents a scholarship of $49,176 per year based upon 2016-2017 graduate school tuition charges. The 2016-2017 Division of Graduate Medical Sciences graduate student stipend is $32,250 per calendar year, increasing to $33,250 post qualifying exams. Health insurance and fees are covered during these years.

**The Biomedical Engineering Department graduate student stipend rate is $$32,250 per calendar year, increasing to $33,862 post qualifying exams. In subsequent years, Research Assistants may expect salary increases as progress is made toward the degree.

BUSM III & IV (Years 7-8): When a student completes the dissertation requirements, including defending and submitting a thesis, he or she returns to the medical school curriculum. Tuition is covered by our enhanced financial aid package. This represents a scholarship of $57,250 per year based on the 2016-2017 medical school tuition rate and does not cover fees and health insurance.

TOTAL VALUE OF AID PACKAGE: Approximately $564,760 ($229,000 medical school scholarship and $335,760 graduate school scholarship and stipend, plus health insurance based upon 4 years of PhD study).
