GMS Faculty Vote – Proposed MS in Oral Health Sciences Program
Currently the Oral Health Sciences (OHS) program is a track within the MA in Medical Sciences program and this proposal serves to make this track its own MS degree.
Briefly, our rational is as follows:
- The rising number of applications (41 in 2005 to 193 in 2012) shows a strong national need for programs like this to help students improve their credentials for dental school admission.
- As a unique program that allow students to take DMD-I courses there is great potential for curricular advances focused in Oral Health, separate from the medical sciences coursework.
- Lastly, there is an administrative need for separation from the parent MA Medical Sciences program.
Since the Oral Health Sciences track was instituted in 2005 we have seen tremendous success with greater than 80% of our graduates matriculating to BU as well as dental schools across the country. The program has continued to grow and build a reputation of its own separate from the very successful parent Medical Sciences program. The proposed 32 credit MS degree has minimal curriculum changes from the current OHS track and has the support of both Dean Hutter and Associate Provost Hyman.
