Ph.D. Program Timeline

During the first two years of the Ph.D. program and in  accordance with the requirements of the individual department/program in which the student is enrolled, the student will

  • complete didactic coursework
  • identify a thesis mentor
  • pass departmental qualifying exams

During the later years of the Ph.D. program (upon completion of the didactic coursework and qualifying exams) and in  accordance with the requirements of the individual department/program in which the student is enrolled, the student will

  • perform Ph.D. research under the guidance of the thesis mentor
  • meet with a thesis committee to assist in the progress of the research

To complete, submit and successfully defend the thesis for timely graduation, the student will

  • submit the dissertation prospectus/outline to the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences at least 9 months prior to the anticipated graduation date
  • draft the dissertation, which is reviewed by the thesis mentor and thesis committee members
  • submit a diploma application 3 months prior to target graduation date
  • submit a dissertation abstract, approved by the department, at least three weeks  prior to final oral exam
  • submit a final oral exam schedule, approved by the department,  at least two weeks  prior to final oral exam
  • defend the thesis at the final oral exam
  • submit the final approved thesis (2 copies with signed approval pages) to the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences office by the appropriate due date
