The Division of Graduate Medical Sciences provides an enhanced financial aid package for all MD/PhD Candidates matriculating as of fall 2011.
Funding for M.D.-Ph.D. students is available in the form of a merit-based Dean’s Scholarship. The Dean’s Scholarship includes full medical school and graduate school tuition. In addition, M.D.-Ph.D. students receive stipends during the Ph.D. study years in accordance with the departmental Ph.D. program.
BUSM I, Year 1: Tuition is covered by our enhanced financial aid package. This represents a scholarship of $49,560 based upon the 2011-2012 medical school tuition charges. The Medical School fee charge and health insurance are not covered.
BUSM II, Year 2: Tuition is covered by our enhanced financial aid package. This represents a scholarship of $49,560 based upon the 2011-2012 medical school tuition charges. The Medical School fee charge and health insurance are not covered.
If a student withdraws from the Ph.D. portion of the program, the scholarship must be repaid.
In addition to the above scholarships, students who participate in 8-10 weeks of research during the summer between the first and second year of BUSM may earn a $4,000 stipend.
Graduate – Ph.D. studies, Year 3-6: All candidates are guaranteed both stipend and tuition. The 2011-2012 Division of Graduate Medical Sciences graduate student stipend is $30,500/ calendar year, increasing to $31,500 post qualifying exams. Health insurance and fees are covered during these years.
**The Biomedical Engineering Department graduate student stipend rate is $28,950/calendar year (30,397.50 after passing written qualifying exam, $31,845 after passing oral qualifying exam)
BUSM III & IV, Year 7-8: When a student completes the dissertation requirements, including defending and submitting a thesis, he or she returns to the medical school curriculum. Tuition is covered by our enhanced financial aid package. This represents a scholarship of $99,120 based on the 2011-2012 medical school tuition of $49,560. The Medical School fee charge and health insurance are not covered.
TOTAL VALUE OF AID PACKAGE: Approximately $$446,659 ($198,240 medical school scholarship, $248,419 graduate school scholarship, stipend, and health insurance based upon 3.5 years of Ph.D. study).
