Want to make a difference? Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program, Information Session Monday November 23 at 5:00 p.m. in R108 The Boston Schweitzer Fellows Program supports graduate students committed to becoming "leaders in service"?individuals who are dedicated and skilled in addressing the health needs of underserved populations, and whose example influences and inspires others. Each year, we select up to 30 graduate students from multiple schools and health related disciplines, each of whom designs and implements their own 200-hour community service projects addressing local unmet health needs. In the process, Fellows develop as lifelong leaders in service through a year-long program of leadership development training, peer reflection, and mentoring. The Fellowship is open to students enrolled in a professional degree program through April 2011; Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend. Applications are due February 1.
To learn more about the Fellowship attend an information at BU Medical School on Monday November 23 at 5:00 p.m. in R108. More information about the program is located online at: http://www.schweitzerfellowship.org/features/us/bos/ . Please contact Devon Reber, Program Director with any questions, dreber@bidmc.harvard.edu. Thanks very much! Devon

$50 to Participate in Vitamin D Study
We are looking for healthy participants over the age of 18 for a clinical research study to investigate the effect of vitamin D on bone health and gene expression. It has been found that at least 80% of individuals are deficient in vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and immune function. People are also more likely to become vitamin D deficient during the winter.
The study requires participants to take vitamin D3 supplements containing either 400 IU or 2,000 IU vitamin D once a day for two months (supplements are provided). Participants will need to come in for two study visits (baseline and follow-up). During each visit, we require participants to answer a questionnaire and have 20 ml of blood taken for measurements. All visits will be conducted at the Fullerton building by the BU medical campus. Each visit will take no more than 45 minutes and there is a $25 compensation ($50 total).
We are conducting this study to see the effect of vitamin D on genes affecting bone health. One of the benefits to the participant includes increasing one’s vitamin D3 blood levels either by 400 IU or 2,000 IU for two months. If you are interested, please call 617-638-8860 or email genomicstudy@gmail.com.
Thanks!

Dear Students:
October has rapidly approached and I anticipate that you are all busy with your studies, so I want to extend invitations to some future events that you can look forward to throughout the remaining semester. As promised, we will be holding two town meetings this fall, one for Masters of Medical Sciences students and one for all other GMS programs, as an open forum for students to raise questions/ concerns, share ideas and discuss the programs. We will also be hosting monthly breakfasts and afternoon teas in the GMS office.
Dean Karen Antman would also like to invite students to meet with her for breakfast on one of the following dates in the calendar below. The meetings will be held in her office, Rm. L103. Unfortunately, each meeting is limited to 7 students so the responses will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. If you do not get to meet with her during this semester, she will have more meetings during the spring semester.
Please note the calendar of events below. Since there is limited space, contact Kayleigh Klegraefe, kay416@bu.edu to sign up for breakfast with Dean Antman and/or Dr. Hyman, providing your name, program, and the date which you would like to attend. The Town Meetings and afternoon teas are open and do not require signing up.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing you!
