Preparing Bioimaging Experts

The first BioImaging Program

The first graduate program developed specifically to produce bioimaging professionals, and the only one taught in a medical school, this self-contained, one-year program combines broad-based theoretical and historical background with hands-on experience using state-of-the-art imaging devices and image processing tools. In addition to interpreting your own data, you’ll also regularly attend physician and resident radiology rounds and conferences at the Boston Medical Center to fully understand how images are used and interpreted for diagnosis.

Foundation first, then take your own direction

The program incorporates direct knowledge of modern imaging modalities, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 1.5, 3.0 and 11.7 T MRI, CT, PET, SPECT, US, and TMS, with relevant anatomy, computer science, physics, and mathematics – along with skills such as writing, presenting, and interviewing. This foundational learning, combined with a high level of flexibility, a wide range of elective courses, and a level of one-to-one interaction more typical of Ph.D. programs than of M.A. programs, allows you to tailor your experience to your specific area of interest and career goals.

Clinical and Research Tracks

We offer both research-oriented and clinical tracks. Both tracks provide unrivaled access to imaging equipment and to actual clinical experience. The choice of track depends on your career focus.

The Academic Research Track provides you with a research-based focus culminating in a thesis project that enables you to enter the broad fields of academia and industry.

The Clinical Track substitutes clinical internships and coursework in MR pathophysiology in place of thesis research. It fulfills the education and ethics requirements that are prerequisites for sitting for the ARRT advanced certification exam that allows one to enter the field as a registered technician.

Either track can be completed in one year. Most courses are taught in the late afternoon or early evening to facilitate part-time and working students. Part time students typically complete the degree program in two years.

The tracks may also be combined.

Team Environment

The Bioimaging program immerses students in a collaborative environment right in the heart of the medical world. The BioImaging faculty, staff, and students form a small team modeled after world-class research teams with significant one-to-one contact, which lead to lifelong working relationships.
