Surgical Research

Surgical Research Section

The Surgical Research Section, located in the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research, consists of several modern laboratories staffed by basic science technicians and personnel with expertise in epidemiology and biostatistics. The staff of the research section provides residents and faculty with advice and assistance in the design, conduct, and analysis of both basic science and clinical research studies.

Resident Research
Academic Fellowships

Surgical residents interested in research in preparation for an academic career are encouraged to apply for a one to three year leave of absence from the clinical residency. During the leave of absence, the academic trainee engages in original research under supervision of a preceptor and may also take course work, allowing the development of skills necessary for independent research at the highest possible technical and scientific level.
The fellow’s research may focus on basic or clinical research or a combination. The scientific resources of Boston University, as well as outside institutions. are available for research training.

Typically two to three residents in each categorical ‘class’ avail themselves of this optional experience. The program has thus far been able to accommodate all resident requests for research time, and has been able to place residents who are seeking special experiences in outstanding extra-mural programs. The program currently has six residents who are on laboratory research experiences.

Residents may also take time off for clinical research. One resident is currently pursuing an MPH in conjunction with a broad based clinical research program in breast cancer.

Clinical Research Projects
Clinical research is also available to residents during the clinical years of training. Many residents have conducted research using the unique clinical databases available in the Surgical Residency Program, including our trauma registry which contains data on over 9000 patients and our NSABP site data. Recent examples include two R4s who produced separate clinical trauma papers, one of which won the state trauma paper competition of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Most residents have produced at least one paper published in a peer reviewed journal by the time of graduation.

The Grasberger Research Symposium

In 1990 the Division of Surgery established The Grasberger Research Symposium in memory of Robert C. Grasberger, M.D., an outstanding graduate of our training program who died in 1986. In recognition of Bob’s academic and research accomplishments. The Grasberger Symposium provides an opportunity for our surgical residents and fellows to present original basic and clinical research.
