Outpatient Experience

The surgical residency is committed to surgical resident education as a continuum encompassing an initial patient encounter and diagnostic evaluation, surgical planning, surgical intervention and care throughout the totality of the postoperative phase. Extensive outpatient experience in the core disciplines of general surgery is available in the following settings:

  1. BMC-  Menino Pavilion: All elective admissions to the BMC HAC general surgery service come through an outpatient clinic system in which the residents are full and central participants. All clinic sessions are attended by a regularly scheduled full time faculty member (each attending takes one clinic per week), who is responsible for supervision of the house staff in the clinic setting. There are four general surgery clinics, a vascular surgery clinic, and a dedicated breast clinic. Clinics are staffed by the general surgery clinic attendings.
  2. BMC – East Newton Campus: Residents assigned to the ENC see pre- and post-operative patients in the adjacent doctors office building with the attending staff on their service. For instance, residents on the Chief’s service see patients in the clinic with Dr. Becker. Clinic exposure takes precedence over operative exposure on this service. The Smithwick and Mozden Services similarly require attendance by house staff at the office hours of the principle surgeons on the service.
  3. Boston VA Medical Center: Most of the elective admissions to the Boston VA come from the outpatient clinic which, similar to the BMC HAC, is staffed by residents and supervised by attendings. The VA runs two combined general surgery/vascular surgery clinics per week and a single GI clinic. All patients in these clinics are seen by surgical house staff with direct attending supervision. These three clinics handle a large volume of patient visits per year and provide residents with thorough pre and post operative involvement with their patients.

   4.    Quincy Medical Center: Quincy Medical Center has a vascular clinic which
staffed by Dr. Gary Gibbons, Dr. Alik Farber, and the Vascular Surgery Fellow.
The PGY 2 or 3 general surgery resident also participates in this clinic.
