$ 425 (Geriatrics Section will cover 1/2 of cost)
Overall program objective
The quality colloquium addresses issues of patient safety and quality within the changing healthcare landscape. There are individualized tracks from ambulatory care to educational interventions which one can choose from over the 2.5 day course. Local and national experts will speak at this session.
Potential benefits
I have recently been appointed as the medical director of the Geriatric Home Care Program. As such, I will have a large role in establishing quality improvement initiatives within the program. Additionally I am a member of the Department of Medicine’s Quality Council and am part of the Geriatric Sections Quality Improvement working group. I will be able to apply the information I learn through attendance at this program in these roles. To improve the quality of care we provide for a large number of patients. In addition to these two roles, I am the “physician champion” for BU Geriatrics in our relation with a large managed care organization, in which attention to quality and cost of care plays a major role.
Reporting back
I will share the information I learn with the colleagues I work with in my roles outlined above and will use the knowledge obtained to initiate new quality improvement activities. Additionally I am willing to complete a debriefing form after I return from this session.
Mentoring Plan
I am currently actively involved in quality improvement activities within the DOM and the Geriatrics Section. I will teach and share the information I learn at this session with my colleagues (from both nursing and physician disciplines) in my current quality work. Additionally the Geriatrics Section’s clinic director, Dr. Lisa Caruso, will mentor me in my development in the area of quality improvement. I work closely with her in my role as medical director of the Geriatric Home Care Program, so this relationship is a continuation of our work together
Detailed budget
Tution: $795 (reduced as I am registering jointly with two other individuals)
Travel: $15 (conference is held in Cambridge, MA)
