Item Discussion Action
Samuel Lowe, BMC chaplain Samuel Lowe introduced himself as the new chaplain at BMC. He works with patients, staff, and medical students. He is also on the Inclusion and Development Committee of the American Friends Service Committee board. He described how the physicians do not always reflect the diversity of the patient population. The committee will devote a future session to brainstorm a multi-pronged approach to enhancing diversity.

We will work the the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to create a culture where faculty can talk openly about race.

Friday afternoon socials Once a month reception (summer and December excluded) from 4-6 p.m. with food, drink, and massage to emphasize self-care.

Alcohol not essential, but a draw. Can include alcohol in the first month and then experiment. Food should be high quality.

For the first event, no specific agenda. In the future can be creative. Possible themes include:

  • community outreach, giving back to the community
  • invite a newsworthy guest or alumnus to mingle
  • guided meditation
  • a musical recital
  • nametags with a curious fact about yourself.
  • play charades
Peter Cahn will reserve Wilkins for the last Friday in January.
Walk and talk The first casual gathering will be on Wednesday, January 25 at 5:30 p.m. led by Matt Russell. Schedule future walks at different times of day.
Midcareer faculty Reviewed the findings of the focus groups with associate professors. Agreed that to show it values faculty development, the institution should free up faculty time to participate.

Could start with longitudinal mentoring program for clinician educators 2 hours a month that leads to a completed project. Leads to ongoing learning community.

Revisit at a future meeting.
