Dr. James Feldman and Dr. Thea James Interviewed on NPR

Dr. James Feldman, Professor and Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Thea James, Associate Professor and Director of the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program (VIAP), have been interviewed on a National Public Radio (NPR) program investigating gun violence.

The broadcast, titled Humankind: Epidemic of Gun Violence, features Dr. Feldman and Dr. James discussing both the medical and public health implications of gun violence.

BMC Receives $2 Million NIH Grant to Study Ambulance Diversion

Dr. James Feldman, Professor and Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, is co-principal investigator in a new study examining at the effect of ambulance diversion on the vulnerable patients that Boston Medical Center serves.

Dr. Feldman helped advocate for Massachusetts banning ambulance diversion state-wide in 2009. Massachusetts is the first and only state in the country to implement this policy.

In an interview on NPR, Dr. Feldman states that "we have strong evidence that people who have critical illness or injury who have delayed time to treatment do worse."

Dr. James Feldman Named Senior Reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine

feldman_faceCongratulations to Dr. James Feldman, Professor and Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, for being named a Senior Reviewer for the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Calling him "among the best of the very best," Annals cited Dr. Feldman's "very substantial academic contribution to the journal and our specialty" as a reason why he was chosen for the position.

Dr. Feldman also serves as Chair of the Institutional Review Board and is a member of the Committee on Publications for the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Dr. Traci Green Appointed to CDC Opioid Guideline Workgroup

Green_Traci-2-5x3-5We are proud to announce that Traci C. Green, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Associate Director of the Boston Medical Center Injury Prevention Research Center, has been appointed to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Opioid Guideline Workgroup.

Dr. Green is one of ten national healthcare experts who were nominated by the CDC to advise its Board of Scientific Counselors on guidelines for opioid prescribing.

Dr. Green earned a Master of Science in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University and a PhD in Epidemiology from Yale University.

BMC Opens New Clinical Simulation Center

We are pleased to announce that Boston Medical Center has opened a new state-of-the-art simulation center!

The Alan D. Solomont & Susan Lewis Solomont Clinical Simulation Center features cutting-edge facilities, supplies, and technology for resident, student, and nursing education. The simulation center is available for use by all hospital departments, but is managed by Emergency Department faculty under the leadership of Dr. Ron Medzon, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director for Medical Simulation.

Dr. Jolion McGreevy Develops SAEM Lecture Series

jolionCongratulations to Dr. Jolion McGreevy, Instructor in Emergency Medicine and Assistant Residency Program Director, for developing "Ethical Decision-making in the Emergency Department," a peer-reviewed lecture series!

Featured in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine, the lecture teaches participants to understand the unique ethical context of the ED, recognize the importance of competence in ethical decision-making, and develop a framework for ethical decision-making in the ED.

Co-developers of the lecture include Dr. Eric Isaacs of University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine, Dr. Keith Marill of Massachusetts General Hospital and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Arvind Venkat of Allegheny Health Network, and the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Ethics Committee.

Dr. Kue, Assistant Professor, Associate Medical Director of Boston EMS, Police & Fire for the City of Boston, and Director of the Boston EMS Medicine Fellowship, discusses differences between emergency medical systems during the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the recent Paris terrorist attacks.

Maureen McMahon, Director of Emergency Preparedness at Boston Medical Center, was also interviewd.

Dr. Gabrielle Jacquet Launches Online Global Health Course

gabrielle jacquetWe are pleased to announce that Dr. Gabrielle Jacquet, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Global Health, has launched The Practitioner's Guide to Global Health, a cutting-edge series of interactive open-access courses to prepare students and trainees to safely and effectively participate in global health learning experiences.

These courses have been made possible thanks to the hard work of over 50 global health experts from all over the world, including many Boston Medical Center faculty, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) International Section, Global Emergency Medicine Academy (GEMA), and the Boston University Digital Learning Initiative.

The first course begins on Monday October 26 at 11am EST. Course registration can be accessed here.

VIAP Receives $1 Million Dollar Grant To Support Violence Survivors

We are proud to announce that our Violence Intervention Advocacy Program (VIAP) has received a one million dollar grant from the Office of Victims of Violence and Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Prevention Program. The grant will support male survivors of violence and their families, as well as address unmet needs of this population.

The two recipients of this grant are Dr. Thea James, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, Associate Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Mission, and Director of VIAP, and Elizabeth Dugan, Program Manager of VIAP and licensed clinical social worker (LICSW).

VIAP is an Emergency Department-based program that helps guide victims of community violence through recovery from physical and emotional trauma. VIAP is a founding member of the National Network of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs, and has helped spawn similar programs at other hospitals around the country.

Dr. Edward Bernstein Featured in ACEP Webinar

Our very own Dr. Edward Bernstein, Professor of Emergency Medicine, Vice Chair for Academic Affairs, and Director of the Publich Health Section, has been featured in a webinar on emergency department naloxone distribution!

Dr. Bernstein is a tireless advocate for emergency department intranasal naloxone kit distribution as a method to combat opioid overdose. In addition, he is a national leader in substance abuse research, intervention, and treatment, as well as co-founder of the innovative and influential Project ASSERT program.

Benjamin Nicholson and Megan Rybarczyk Selected to be 2015 GEMLR Reviewers

Congratulations to Dr. Benjamin Nicholson, PGY1, and Dr. Megan Rybarczyk, PGY3, for being selected as Reviewers for the 2015 Global Emergency Medicine Literature Review (GEMLR)!

The Global Emergency Medicine Literature Review promotes high-quality global emergency medicine research by annually cataloguing and summarizing the year's publications in Academic Emergency Medicine.  Dr. Nicholson and Dr. Rybarczyk were chosen from a very competitive pool of applicants to participate in this project.

In addition, Dr. Gabrielle Jacquet, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Global Health, acts as an Editor of the Global Emergency Medicine Literature Review.

Dr. Thea James Appointed Vice President of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Thea L. James, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, has been appointed Vice President of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer of Boston Medical Center!

Dr. James will now manage Boston Medical Center's partnerships with numerous community agencies, housing advocates, food agencies, community mental health providers, substance abuse programs, and violence prevention programs.

Dr. Ravin Davidoff, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs, cited Dr. James' "innate ability to truly connect with our patients" and her "passion and dedication" as reasons why she was chosen for the position.

We are proud of Dr. James' many accomplishments and leadership positions. Congratulations!

Published in JAMA: “Does My Mother Really Need That Central Line?”

Congratulations to Dr. Anton Travis Manasco, PGY2, and Dr. Judy Linden, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair for Education, for their publication in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine on the role of palliative care in emergency medicine!

The authors write that "emergency physicians can add dignity and quality to our patients’ last stage of life" by initiating discussions on end-of-life care in the Emergency Department.

BMC ED Cited as Leader in Narcan Kit Distribution

Dr. Edward Bernstein, Professor of Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Kristin Dwyer, graduate of the BMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program, were featured in a recent article in the Boston Herald on efforts to treat patients suffering from opioid addiction.

Boston Medical Center's Department of Emergency Medicine is a national leader in substance abuse research, intervention, and treatment. Our innovative Project ASSERT program and nasal naloxone kit distribution efforts were cited by the article as potential models for other emergency departments trying to combat the region's opioid epidemic.
