For our physician* participants:
BUSM-CME wants to inform you about changes in the reporting of your participation in CME which may impact you due to Open Payments, also known as the “Physician Payments Sunshine Act,” as of August 1, 2013. Open Payments are required by Section 6002 of the Affordable Care Act.
As a physician taking part in an ACCME accredited CME program funded by one or more pharmaceutical or device companies, if you partake of any food and beverage (and possible other items of value**) provided during the program, the cost of that meal may be reported by the pharmaceutical funder and attributed to your name to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
In order to assist with reporting, BUSM-CME may ask you for some of the following identifiers as required by CMS:
- NPI #
- Workplace address
- License Number
- Do you hold ownership or investment interest in the applicable manufacturer (the funder)?
- Other data required for reporting
BUSM-CME will make every effort to notify you in advance if you are registering for a CME program which requires reporting to CMS. We will give you the opportunity to opt-out of the reportable component of the program (ie. meals, text books) when applicable.
You WILL have the chance to review your reportable information before it is publicly posted by CMS.
*This list includes Doctors of Medicine, Osteopathy, Dentistry, Dental Surgery, Podiatry, Optometry, Chiropractic Medicine
**Textbooks, medical supplies
