Boston University School of Medicine is pleased to announce the additional program dates of its innovative Preceptorship in Type 2 Diabetes. This week-long, clinical immersion program will provide primary care physician and nurses with multidisciplinary training in the treatment and management of diabetes through individual instruction, supervised patient sessions, and mentoring from experts. The program will be held August 3 – 7, 2009 and October 19 – 23, 2009.
Under the tutelage of Dr. Elliot Sternthal (Assistant Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Director of Outpatient Diabetes Program at Boston Medical Center), participants will receive intensive, cutting edge training in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes patients within with the Endocrinology and Diabetes Service at Boston Medical Center.
The training will cut across multiple specialties related to diabetes care. The fellowship program’s goal is to send primary care clinicians back to their practices with the ability to treat Type 2 diabetes earlier, and more aggressively when detected. Two clinicians will be invited to participate in this intensive week-long preceptorship. You will have the unique opportunity to take the lead in seeing and treating patients in a clinic setting, under the guidance of a specialty expert. Participants will also receive training from faculty representing endocrinology, cardiology, podiatry, nutrition, weight management, care coordination and coding. The program includes reviews of published endocrinology journal articles, recent practice guidelines, and difficult or unusual problems for the practicing endocrinologist, as well as discussion of complications of procedures and other adverse events, current research hypotheses, methods and results.
Prospective participants should submit an application, curriculum vitae, reference and proof of eligibility to practice medicine in Massachusetts. Participants will be chosen by Dr. Sternthal and the CME Office, based on eligibility and program suitability.
