Course Descriptions

Fall Semester

Medical Terminology (Lec 2 credits): Understanding medical terminology is fundamental for anyone working in the sciences. It is the language of the technician and researcher involved in biology or health services. This course will teach the analysis and construction of medical words within a context of scientific concepts. Topics covered include anatomy, blood, cancer medicine, biotechnology and pharmacology.

Introduction to Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (Lec/Lab 4 credits): The purpose of this course is to introduce the basic concepts and principles to students pursuing careers in laboratory sciences. Students will learn how to prepare the chemical solutions that they will use during the course. Lab experiments will be performed to learn techniques and methods that are used in biology labs throughout the world.

Spring Semester

Biotechnology (Lec 2 credits): Describes the science of biotechnology, taking the student through the history of the industry, covering the basic science of DNA and its functions, immunology, proteins and their purification, and fundamental techniques used in the research and development of biotechnological products. An overview of the drug approval process by the FDA is also covered.

Cell Culture Techniques (Lec/Lab 4 credits): Teaches sterile techniques and the procedures involved in routine maintenance of a tissue culture facility. Emphasis is practical rather than theoretical: students spend most of class time in the laboratory, working with live cells in culture.
