The Clinical Addiction and Research Education (CARE) Program supports one fellow each year in the established Boston University General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program (GIM) to conduct research focusing on substance abuse. The Boston University GIM Fellowship has graduated fellows annually since 1983. This program provides an opportunity to develop advanced research skills and receive career mentoring. Funded by a grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), the CARE Program enables exposure to faculty in the Boston University Schools of Medicine, Public Health and Social Work, as well as practitioners in community-based treatment organizations. The GIM Fellowship Program includes the following: a) didactic training in research methods with biweekly conferences; b) a minimum of two research projects and; c) fulfillment of a Masters degree in the School of Public Health. Previous CARE Fellows have undertaken research projects addressing substance use and a variety of related issues both in the United States and internationally: HIV infection; homelessness; quality of care; and hepatitis C.
Fellowship Components:
- Research training in substance abuse, and its prevention and treatment, supervised by nationally recognized researchers. Education about drug abuse research that focuses on medical consequences.
- Completion of a Masters degree at Boston University School of Public Health with training in statistics, epidemiology, qualitative research methods, and design of clinical trials.
- Attendance and co-facilitation of an annual Chief Resident immersion course on the care of substance abusing patients.
- Clinical experiences in substance abuse treatment community-based organizations, with opportunity to train the staff about the medical complications of drug use while learning about the agency programs.
Training Sites:
- The General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program is a community-oriented training program already integrated into three regional teaching hospitals: Boston Medical Center, Boston Veterans Administration Medical Center and Bedford Veterans Administration Hospital. The program provides a peer group for collaboration within the fellowship.
- Boston University School of Public Health is a fully accredited Public Health degree program in an urban setting. The curriculum is designed to meet the educational needs of present and future public health professionals. Offering both full and part-time study programs, BUSPH provides an inter-disciplinary graduate education for intellectual and professional advancement. The majority of the 55 full-time faculty and 190 part-time faculty hold concurrent academic positions at Boston University School of Medicine.
- Clinical Research Training (CREST) Program is federally funded and designed to support research training in specialty areas of medicine, surgery or dentistry. The program has developed a biweekly seminar covering critical topics that may not be addressed by coursework. The seminars expose trainees to the institution’s ongoing clinical research activities, serve as a forum for trainee research presentations, and provide a model for constructive critique of clinical research.
- Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Services, Boston Public Health Commission provides opioid replacement treatment, outpatient counseling, acupuncture and harm reduction services to Boston’s urban population.
Support:
- Fellows will receive salary and benefits, BUSPH tuition, and conference travel funds.
- Office space, access to word processing, database and statistical software, and statistical and other methodological consultations will be available.
Eligibility and Application Information:
- Applicants must have completed a residency in internal medicine, family practice, or emergency medicine.
- Applicants should complete the full application package for the Boston University General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program (GIM).
