CPC hosted the 9th NHLBI Investigators’ Meeting of the Proteomics Initiative on April 18 and 19, 2007. The two-day program, consisting of closed networking sessions on the first day and open research session on the second day, highlighted research of the 10 Centers and featured junior investigators, informal networking, CPC laboratory techniques, and a symposium with invited speakers, open to all. Meeting attendees rated the meeting 1.9, and want to continue the symposium concept.

A new role for fat has been proposed by project 8 researchers, led by Dr. Kenneth Walsh, in the January Journal of Clinical Investigation. Come hear them present the research Aug. 24, 10:30 am, conference rooms 107/108, 670 Albany St. Spotlight, publication.

Quantification of oxidative post-translational modifications of cysteine thiols of p21ras demonstrates the potential importance of redox modulation of its function, published in Free Radical Biology & Medicine, March 2007, by project 2 researchers. Spotlight.

Investigators are beginning to publish in open access journals, as PLoS Biology, where the project 6 team published in January their results of large-scale mapping of E. coli transcriptional regulation. The investigators use computational tools that predict regulatory pathways with great accuracy and can be used for sample classification and relative quantification in proteomics analysis of complex data sets.

Joseph Zaia, Ph.D., Research Associate Professor of Biochemistry, is newly a member of our proteomics center. As Associate Director of the Mass Spectrometry Resource, he has directed the Shared Mass Spectrometry Instrument Laboratory for many years and now will provide consultation on experimental setup, instruction, and assistance in data interpretation related to innovative protein analyses using a newly-installed ThermoFisher LTQ-Orbitrap mass spectrometer within the lab. Recently we said goodbye to Cheng Zhao, Ph.D., Mahadevan Sethuraman, Ph.D., Tyler Heibeck, Ph.D., and Claire Dauly. Congratulations to Vera Ivleva, now a Ph.D., who defended her thesis, “Direct coupling of thin layer chromatography with vibrationally cooled MALDI-MS for the analysis of glycolipids from biological samples” in April. image of Vera Ivleva
