Central Administration Update
The projects making up the CPC are advancing on their specific aims, publishing regularly, and, with over 25 grant proposals submitted and seven funded–most recently a collaboration between project 10 and the Core Laboratory to study sickle cell patients — clearly have become integral university resources. CPC-related work has expanded into studies that now are incorporated into the renewal of the BUMC Center of Excellence in Sickle Cell Disease. In the year under review, over 30 papers were published and CPC hosted the “Oxidative Post-Translational Modifications of Proteins in Cardiovascular Disease” symposium for which we obtained NHLBI and NIDDK conference funding as well as corporate support. Boston University highlighted publications in press releases (see publications).
“Oxidative Post-Translational Modifications in the Cardiovascular System (OPTM)” was the first-ever to focus on this topic. The conference was again hosted Oct. 3-6, 2006 OPTM 2006.
As the complex of projects clears the midpoint of funding, the number of research directions requires additional staff. Additional funding for technical staff and specialized protein fractionation equipment in the Core Laboratory has been secured and recruitment of technicians, programmers, and post-doctoral fellows who will be on board during the remaining years has begun.
The administrative core, representing all of the CPC research projects, has shared research with other NHLBI Proteomics Initiative centers at investigator meetings, designed new course instruction on mass spectrometry and proteomics, maintained the web presence, and directed the overall activities of the center. One of those activities consisted of a two-year collaboration with the subcontractor, Beyond Genomics, which came to conclusion in February 2004.
