What is ventricular aneurysm repair?
Ventricular aneurysm repair is one of the many treatments we offer in the Department of Cardiac Surgery at Boston Medical Center. A ventricular aneurysm can be a serious complication of a heart attack (myocardial infarction). It occurs when a weakened section of the wall of one of the ventricles, the lower heart chambers, expands and bulges like a balloon at the spot where the heart attack occurred. Afterward, scar tissue usually forms, which may calcify and cause complications. Symptoms generally include shortness of breath, chest pain, or heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmias). If left untreated, ventricular aneurysm can lead to heart failure or dangerous blood clotting.

We offer a surgical repair procedure in which one of our renowned cardiac surgeons makes an incision in the chest (sternotomy), removes the weakened area of the ventricle wall, and then sews the walls of the ventricle back together. Our surgeons take care not to remove more of the heart wall than is necessary. Aneurysm repair is often followed by medication therapy.

What are the advantages of ventricular aneurysm repair?
The advantage of this procedure is that the aneurysm is cured and the potential for heart failure and blood clotting is greatly reduced. The surgeon is able to get a clear view of your heart’s health and can thus take appropriate treatment and preventive measures.
