Biography

Ian was formally the Director of the Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Western Australia for 13 years until the Centre was dismantled. In the State of Western Australia he is a Registered Forensic Practitioner in the discipline of Forensic Entomology and an expert witness in the science of entomology. He has appeared in courts in Western Australia, Northern territory, Queensland and New South Wales. Ian has recently joined Boston University Medical School contributing into their Forensic Science program. Ian has worked extensively with law enforcement agencies delivering workshops in forensic entomology in Australia (Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania) and with the FBI in the USA which include the investigation of decomposition of bodies buried and on the surface. Ian has a collaborative program with the University of Tennessee Anthropological Centre (body Farm) and the Medical School in Knoxville (TN). This research will eventuate into an atlas for decomposition. Over a 12 year period Ian has been invited to teach the FBI Evidence Response Teams at the Human Remains Recovery School at the University of Tennessee Anthropological Centre.
Ian has been involved in forensic case work and research since 1989. This culminated in the most successful postgraduate Centre in Forensic Science in Australia offering Graduate Diplomas, Masters and combined Masters/PhD programs in 22 disciplines. The Centre completed 442 Graduate Diplomas, 67 Master and 34 PhD degrees.
