Cardiology

From analyzing clinical care to advanced molecular and cellular research, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is a world leader in investigating the causes of cardiovascular disease and its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The school has made some of the field’s most important discoveries.

Chief among its resources are the Cardiovascular Center (CVC) and the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, both partnerships with the Boston Medical Center (BMC).

The CVC offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for a full range of cardiac diseases and conditions, with expertise in interventional cardiology, coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy (heart failure), arrhythmia, noninvasive imaging and preventive cardiology. It is nationally recognized for its interventional procedures, including balloon angioplasty and stents, and lauded for its preventive medicine approaches, from medically supervised exercise to lifestyle-modification programs.

The Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute fosters advances in research, treatment, and education in heart and vascular disease. It comprises labs researching atherosclerosis, diabetes, heart failure, aneurysms, amyloidosis, hypertension, and more. The NIH Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recognizes the Institute as a Specialized Center of Research in Hypertension and as a Specialized Center of Research in Ischemic Heart Disease, thus designating it a site for important medical research in the national interest. That NIH institute also recently designated it a Center for Cardiovascular Proteomics.
