I completed a combined undergraduate and medical education program (MMEDIC) at Boston University in 1993, and went on to pursue a dermatology residency at the University of Miami (UM). After residency, my procedural dermatology fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Dermatologic, Laser, and Cosmetic Surgery took place at New York University. As an alternative to the executive MBA, I took part in the Program for Leadership Development (PLD) at Harvard Business School. PLD is an accelerated learning experience that is fast track to leadership through the completion of modules 1-4 initially followed by module 5 the following year. Due to my studies, I have gained alumni status at Harvard Business School/University. I was one of four in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to be selected to complete an eight-month Physician Leadership Academy program in South Florida. The AAD Advanced Leadership Program through the American Academy of Dermatology, which I also completed in 2017, focused on physician leadership and communication.

Currently, I serve as the editor-in-chief of the Lasers in Medical Science journal and the editor of 8 well known textbooks: Techniques in Dermatologic Surgery (Elsevier, 2003), Skin Cancer (McGraw Hill, 2008), Complications in Dermatologic Surgery (Elsevier, 2008), Lasers in Dermatology and Medicine (Springer, 2011), Mohs Micrographic Surgery (Springer, 2012), Dermatologic Surgery: Step by Step (Blackwell Willey, 2012) and Laser Dermatology Handbook  (Springer 2014) and Beautiful skin: A Dermatologist’s Guide to a Younger-Looking You (Nova, 2015).  I am currently completing 2 additional textbooks on “Pediatric Dermatologic Surgery (Wiley 2018)” and “two volumes text book on “Laser in Dermatology and Medicine 2nd Edition (Springer 2018).I am the author of about 430 publications including about 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 130 book chapters, and many other publications.Since 1999, I have been an invited speaker, moderator and presenter over 550 times at national and international meetings. I also serve in editorial roles, including editor of the Cells to Surgery Quiz Section of the Journal Investigative Dermatology, Section Editor for Dermatologic Surgery section of the International Journal of Dermatology, and the surgical advisory board for JAMA Dermatology, among others.

My study regarding behavioral analysis on sun safety practices for infants received national attention from the media. I have completed and performed many clinical research trials in the areas of lasers for treatment of scars, lasers for treatment of skin cancers, attempting to define the peak absorption of basal cell carcinomas, treatment of acute wounds with artificial skins and lights, etc. I have collaborated with basic scientists in the department of dermatology in a number of translational studies looking for markers in non-melanoma skin cancers. As a member of the UM staff, one of my several contributions is being Director of the Graduate Education Specialty Training (GEST) Program for the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery since 2004 (GEST is one of the largest observership programs in the country that allows international dermatologists to rotate and observe various aspects of dermatology within our department). Besides my leadership roles within UM, I have also held various leadership roles for the Florida Society of Dermatologic Surgeons (Board of Director, Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-President, and President), American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (past program Co-Chairman of mastery of lasers course), American College of Mohs Surgery, the American Society of Lasers in Medicine and Surgery, and the International Society of Dermatology (current vice-president and previous co-chairman for continental meetings).

Some of my honors include: Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Dermatological Association, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Castle Connolly, U.S. News America’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, Surgeon of the year for the Florida Society of Dermatologic Surgery, Excellence in International Patient Care and Outreach from the Florida Society of Dermatology, among others.
