About Us
Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) is a major research institution, providing an exceptional environment for students interested in basic science, clinical investigation, or public health and health services oriented research. BUSM has 660 medical students, and a similar number of graduate students in the medical school actively engaged in the study of medicine and the biomedical sciences. Located in the historic South End of Boston, BUSM shares a campus with Boston Medical Center, the School of Public Health, the Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center.
History
BUSM was formed in 1873 when Boston University merged with the New England Female Medical College, becoming the first coeducational medical school. The New England Female Medical College, founded in 1848, was the first institution to medically train women and graduated the first black woman physician. Throughout our history we have maintained a strong commitment to the study and practice of medicine in the context of a mission of service to society.
Educational Programs
Our clinical teaching program provides rich and diverse opportunities in 25 affiliated hospitals, 15 neighborhood health centers, and numerous private clinics and doctors’ offices in greater Boston. Students also participate in international health programs and a variety of professional and social service activities. In addition, our Division of Graduate Medical Sciences offers PhD and MA degrees in many health sciences disciplines. Examples of MA or MS degrees include Bioimaging, Clinical Investigation, Medical Sciences, and Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine, Biomedical Forensics and Genetic Counseling.
Pathways
In addition to the traditional four-year program, the School of Medicine offers various pathways leading to the MD degree. In collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, an accelerated seven year program, and a non-accelerated, 8-year program, the Modular Medical Integrated Curriculum, both lead to the BA and MD degrees. A similar Early Medical School Selection Program, in collaboration with historically black and Hispanic colleges, is designed to increases our minority physician population. We offer a BS/MD degree with the College of Engineering, MD/MPH and MD/DSc degrees with the School of Public Health, and MD/MBA degrees with the School of Management. The School of Medicine and its Division of Graduate Medical Sciences) offer a combined MD/PhD degree.
