New Pediatric Vice Chairs of Clinical Services Named

The Department of Pediatrics has announced a new structure for the Clinical Vice Chair in the Department of Pediatrics with the appointments of Sharon O’Brien, MD, as Vice Chair of Subspecialty and Acute Care Services, and Jack Maypole, MD, as Vice Chair of Population Health and Practice Transformation. This coincides with the official launch of the MassHealth Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) reform program on March 1, and the Department’s continued focus on population health initiatives.

COM-sharon_obrien O’Brien, a clinical associate professor, is a 1992 graduate of Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric training at New England Medical Center and the Floating Hospital for Children and trained in Pediatric Cardiology at the Yale-New Haven Hospital.  In her role as Vice Chair for Subspecialty and Acute Care Services, O’Brien will be responsible for expansion of BMC subspecialty services, partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital, and reviewing hospital-based services. She also will work closely with Maypole on efforts for Boston Accountable Care Organization (BACO), which is the largest of our four BMC Health System ACOs participating in the MassHealth reform.
COM-jack_maypole Maypole, an associate professor,  is a 1996 graduate of the Yale University School of Medicine and completed his pediatric training in the Boston Combined Residency Program. He served as Chief Resident in the Department of Pediatrics and then served as the Chief of Pediatrics at the South End Community Health Center while also working in BMC’s Comprehensive Care Program. In his role as Vice Chair of Population Health and Practice Transformation, Maypole’s work will focus on the continued expansion of BMC’s Pediatric Ambulatory Services, the development of BMC’s model for the care of children with complex disease, and he will partner with O’Brien in the development of care models within BACO.
