Three first-year medical students have been recognized by the Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) for their essay about a procedural change to reduce hazardous waste in operating rooms. The essay was written in response to the contest,  “Greening the OR,” designed to facilitate discourse between students, residents and perioperative faculty and staff regarding ideas that demonstrate environmental responsibility in the operating room through reduction of energy use, preservation of natural resources and/or effective waste management.

Varsha Muralidhar, Pawarissara Osathanugrah and Alexus Skobodzinski will receive complimentary registration to the 2017 AWS Conference and a $200 monetary prize.
