BU Named an International “Upstart University”

Interdisciplinary Research and Citations Recognized

Recently Boston University was named to an elite group of international upstart universities, a select group of higher education institutions best positioned to challenge old school elite institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale, according to a recent analysis by Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. This group includes universities from 11 countries across North America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region with more than half (28) of the institutions hailing from the US. Boston University placed 25th by citations score, 26th by clinical subject ranking, and 64th overall.

Interviews with leaders of several universities in the “powerhouse” group suggest that strong medicine faculties and highly interdisciplinary research have led to their high scores in both clinical subjects and research citations. Times Higher Education also found that “the international powerhouses generally excel in a smaller number of subjects, often in particular clinical disciplines rather than the arts. Their research influence also tends to outweigh their prestige.”
