Candidates Sought for Director, Office of Medical Education

A search is underway to fill a vacant position within the Office of Academic Affairs (80 percent time), Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of the Office of Medical Education.

The Director of the Office of Medical Education (OME) will serve as an Assistant Dean to the Office of Academic Affairs. The Director supervises the faculty and staff in the OME including faculty running courses and programs in the OME and faculty responsible for faculty development activities.

A major function of the OME is program evaluation and compliance. The Director oversees the collection, organization, and reporting of evaluation data including student evaluation or courses and faculty, evaluation of student performance in courses/clerkships/end of year assessments, and conducts an annual survey of internship directors who have BUSM graduates.

The Director chairs the Evaluation QI subcommittee, the LCME subcommittee, and the Curriculum Management subcommittee and directs the LCME preparation process and monitors compliance with LCME standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supervises the faculty and staff in the OME including faculty running courses and programs in the OME and faculty responsible for faculty development activities. Courses/Programs in the OME include Introduction to Clinical Medicine 1 Spring, Introduction to Clinical Medicine 2, Integrated Problems 1, Integrated Problems 2, Clinical Skills Simulation Center,  End of Year Assessments for years 1-3, and the clinical remediation program.
  • Evaluation and compliance: Oversees the collection, organization, and reporting of evaluation data including student evaluation or courses and faculty, evaluation of student performance in courses/clerkships/end of year assessments, and conducts an annual survey of internship directors who have BUSM graduates. This includes insuring implementation and functioning of the curriculum database, accurate coding of BUSM learning objectives and the Physician Competency Reference Set (PCRS), compliance with the CRC Graduate Program Outcomes Initiative, and implementation of the curriculum content process (“BUSM-30”).  The Director also monitors the Collaborative Student Assessment System (“feed-forward” initiative) for students with supplemental clinical training needs.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with LCME standards, directing the LCME preparation process. This includes serving as chair for the LCME subcommittee and the Curriculum Management subcommittee.
  • Provides supervision and oversee expansion to Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Simulation programs. The Director provides supervision of the current IPE experiences at the Boston VA for first year MD students, the fourth year geriatric clerkship experience with Curry College, and reviews opportunities for additional expansion of IPE within the curriculum. Manages the relationship with the Boston Medical Center simulation center, oversees activities in the Clinical Skills Simulation Center at BUSM, and reviews opportunities for expansion of simulation-based training within the curriculum.
  • Oversees Quality Improvement within the curriculum, chairing the Evaluation Quality Improvement subcommittee and reviewing the evaluation data collected by the OME to make real-time adjustments to the curriculum as needed. Works with course and clerkship faculty to identify strengths and opportunities within the courses/clerkships based data and evaluations received by the OME.
  • Serves as an Assistant Dean to the Office of Academic Affairs, and may be called upon to provide representation or coverage for the Associate Dean at relevant meetings or when the Associate Dean is unavailable to address urgent matters that may arise.

Qualifications:

  • Administrative, managerial, and leadership experience in an accredited medical school preferred
  • Experience in teaching students and mentoring faculty members
  • Candidates must possess a Doctoral Degree
