BU Amyloidosis Center

I am writing to announce the appointments of Martha Skinner, MD, as interim director and Vaishali Sanchorawala, MD, as associate director of the BU Amyloidosis Center.

Dr. Skinner previously directed the center from 1988 to 2007 and currently is professor emerita of medicine. Dr. Sanchorawala is a professor of medicine in the Section of Hematology/Oncology and director of the Stem Cell Transplant Program. Under Dr. Skinner’s and then Dr. David Seldin’s leadership, the Amyloidosis Center became a Center of Excellence within Boston University and is an international leader in basic and clinical research on amyloid diseases.

In 1994 the Center pioneered high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation, which became the first effective treatment for AL amyloidosis — a success that is now the standard of care worldwide. With extensive clinical research progress here and elsewhere, treatment options and clinical trial participation now can be offered for AL and familial forms of amyloidosis to the more than 500 patients who visit the Amyloidosis Clinic at Boston Medical Center from around the world each year.
