090.1 Introduction and Overview to Rehabilitation Medicine

Description of Elective:
During this elective the student is exposed to various practice settings for rehabilitation medicine including inpatient rehabilitation (both acute and subacute), outpatient rehabilitation medicine, and to the rehabilitation medicine consultation service. Students spend 1 week each in each of these rehabilitation settings. During the consult week the student is involved in the evaluation of patients on other services, assessing patient’s functional status and assisting resident and attending physicians to answer rehabilitation-related questions. During the week of acute rehabilitation the student participates in the care of inpatients with brain injury secondary to trauma, stroke, hypoxia and other causes of encephalopathy; patients who have experienced a loss of function as the result of multiple orthopedic trauma, and patients who have recently suffered a spinal cord injury. He/She becomes part of an interdisciplinary team including physicians, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language pathology, neuropsychology, social service, case management and recreation therapy. During the outpatient week the student participates in the care of acute and chronic rehabilitation illnesses in an outpatient setting. The student is exposed to a wide range of rehabilitation problems and solutions throughout this 4 week elective.
