Statement of Policy on Fourth Year Electives
1. The responsibility for the content, suitability and educational value of a particular elective, whether elected at BUSM or outside BUSM rests with the department to which the elective relates. Those elective courses, the content of which encompasses more than one discipline represented in the medical school, should be reviewed by those concerned. Similar to other courses given at BUSM, information concerned with content and scheduling of individual elective courses would be made available to the student through the Registrar’s Office.
2. A program advisor will be chosen by the student with the consent of the advisor. The advisor should become well acquainted with the student, his career interests and any background information from the Associate Dean for Student Affair’s Office that would better assist him to counsel and advise the student so that an effective educational fourth year program can be developed.
3. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs (or her delegate) will review a proposed fourth year program to ensure that particular deficiencies or requirements that promotion committees have identified in the course of evaluating the student’s progress in medical school have been considered by the student and the advisor in setting up the fourth year program. The Chairman of the Curriculum Committee should be consulted in instances where the student, the advisor and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs cannot evolve an effective fourth year program; the student, advisor or the Associate Dean for Student Affairs can request such consultation.
4. It is agreed that the supervisor of an elective course will be asked to evaluate the performance of the student. These evaluations will be forwarded to the Registrar’s Office where they will become a part of the student’s permanent academic record.
